Florence — 45 minutes
Florence is the closest major city and the most visited. From our agriturismo it can be reached comfortably by car or by train from Empoli. Must-sees: the Uffizi Gallery, the Duomo, Piazzale Michelangelo, Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens.
Tip: set off early in the morning to avoid queues at museums.
Book Uffizi tickets in advance, especially in summer.
Siena – 55 minutes
Siena is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Piazza del Campo, the Cathedral and the Palazzo Pubblico are unmissable. If you are lucky, you may witness the Palio (2 July and 16 August).
Tip: Siena has a restricted traffic zone — park outside the city walls and continue on foot.
San Gimignano — 40 minutes
Known as the “Manhattan of the Middle Ages” for its medieval towers, San Gimignano has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. The historic centre can be explored on foot in less than an hour. Worth tasting: Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG and the award-winning gelato by Dondoli (two-time world champion).
Volterra — 70 minutes
Volterra is one of the most fascinating Etruscan cities in Tuscany. The Etruscan walls, the Roman theatre, the Guarnacci Etruscan Museum and hand-crafted alabaster are the main attractions. Less touristy than Siena and San Gimignano, it is ideal for those seeking authenticity.
Certaldo — 20 minutes
Medieval village and birthplace of Giovanni Boccaccio, author of the Decameron.
The red-brick historic centre is reached by funicular.
Every year it hosts Mercantia, an international street theatre festival.
Monteriggioni — 45 minutes
One of the best-preserved medieval villages in Tuscany, with its 14 towers encircling the town. It can be visited in under an hour and pairs well with a trip to Siena.
Chianti Montespertoli
Montalbino is located in the Chianti Montespertoli wine territory, one of the most interesting wine areas in Tuscany, home of Chianti Montespertoli DOCG. The area is ideal for cycling routes and wine tasting at local wineries.

Getting around
A car is the most convenient way to explore the area.
The agriturismo has free parking.
For Florence, you can also take the train from Empoli (35 minutes by car from the agriturismo), with frequent services to Florence Santa Maria Novella (20 minutes by train).
For those who prefer two wheels, the agriturismo offers mountain bike rental to explore the white roads of Chianti.
